Carelessness

Julia paged through to the newspaper while drinking her usual black coffee that morning. All excited, she stopped at the page she was looking for and skimmed the names on the list accurately until the end twice, but her name wasn't there. Oh, she thought surprised, how could it possibly have happened? If she hadn't been selected, somebody else would be joining the next moon landing in December this year.

After that puzzling experience, she decided to call Peter, her brother. He had taken responsibility for her to post her application in after all, and he deserved to know it. A few days ago Julia had had a not serious injury after one of the physical test required for the NASA application, and so the doctor ordered complete relax. “We all know that you are going to join the crew whom will land to the Moon station at the end of the year! – Peter said - Don’t worry Julia, I will take care to post it in on time. If I didn’t have the next two days off from work, I wouldn’t have accepted this responsibility so I wouldn’t be able to post it tomorrow before 12 pm”.

That morning Peter picked up the phone after 2 call attempts only. Julia was surprised and relieved, as he was usually swamped. “What’s up, Julia? Can I call you later, sweetheart? If I spent two minutes more out of the court, I wouldn’t be able to take part in the debate. I must admit that this judge is very strict on time!” He laughed nervously. It sounded typical to Julia, who always had tough that her brother was a workaholic.
Julia would have accepted his request to call him back later if she had cared about it, but she burst into bitter tears while telling him that the beyond the bound of possibility just happened. “If I knew that I was not going to the moon on the next expedition, Peter, I would have accepted that job at the astrophysical laboratory!” she cried.
Peter listened quietly, letting her give vent to her feelings, and he realised that if he hadn’t accepted that vital task from her, he wouldn’t be going to break her heart in the next few minutes. He knew that he had decided to work from home all day that day, and wouldn’t have forgotten to post her candidature if he were going to face a thorny trial next week. But sadly I had forgotten his promise, and he just realised it.
After he had admitted his guilt, Julia didn’t say anything, hanging up on him without a word. She stayed astonished for a while after his confession, and she thought she might have been selected for the moon landing if Peter hadn’t forgotten to post in her candidature. With the handset still on her hand, she realised that Her life dream has always been to go to the moon!

The next afternoon Peter was going to forget all the story already after sending her a bunch of wildflowers, her favourites if he hadn’t received a private registered mail from a lawyer. Inside the envelope, Peter found a formal document edited by this agent, where it was requested to Peter to submit a formal request to NASA to reconsider Julia's official application for an error that occurred in its damage by a carelessness of him. Shocked, Peter also found one more document inside the envelope, but it was a personal letter from her sister Julia this time.

“Dear Brother,

If only I didn’t have so many things to settle before I would go to the moon…

If were possible for me to be there at this very moment, I would have paid million dollars to see your face!

Thank you for the wildflowers, you know how much I love them! But do you really think that a bunch of beautiful flowers might have been sufficient to close this matter? And were you reading this letter of mine if it had been enough, Peter?

You might have ruined the occasion of my life with your carelessness, and I trust you would find a way to retrieve your mistake.

See Peter, if you weren’t such carelessness, you wouldn’t be spending all day and night today and maybe all week to come working on this petition, and remember that if you didn’t do this job impeccably, you would go to court next week, and not as a lawyer this time!

Yours sincerely,

Julia”
